The story of Another World is Possible is a true earth odyssey, an apocalyptic adventure, a disaster thriller, a science nonfiction journey from dystopia to protopia, and above all, a love story, that begins... in the backyard, imagining new worlds and storytelling my way through them-- role playing an adventure to save the world from evil with wooden sword in hand, a young Zachary Marlow drove his excalibur into a fallen birdhouse as if it were the stone, and a swarm of bees reared up like a dragon and turned the lights out.
Flash forward through a decade of depression, anxiety and ADHD induced pharmaceutical tranquilizing into dawning adulthood, dropping out of film school, working freelance shooting every kind of video under the sun from soul sucking corporate video, commercials, art house museum pieces, music videos, narratives, and docs. Haunted by the experience of shooting my first film about an orphanage in Romania, tossing and turning through the american dream turned nightmare, and visions of apocalyptic climate futures and images of bees tore my world apart. In my quest to understand I found an Einstein quote that if the bees go extinct we have 5 years till all life on earth followed.
This sent me into full tilt madness, an alcoholic tailspin, crashing into a failed suicide attempt plot, enacting Hamlet and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest in a psych ward illuminating the breakthrough that others have it so much worse, that I'm not crazy, our society itself is, and as long as I can help others, my life has a purpose.
I found my way out, hitchhiked into the setting sun to follow my heart to adventure, and outside the castle walls I found a greater story than I could ever imagine, etched in the faces of homeless men who shared their food and shelter, built in earthship villages and regenerative communes and alternative forms of life in every color. I lived many lifetimes. I traveled the earth without money, without a care. I followed my heart, and gave up my expectations and got back the world. I found my purpose, and honed my craft shooting home movies the whole way on my phone, learning how to get by on stories alone. I lived in the gift economy of the future, and I saw the systems of our world from the outside, as an alien observer. I had my Che Guevara motorcycle trip across Central America, I interviewed grandmothers tell of imperial coups, I saw the best minds of my generation crushed under debt, and every inch my freedom grew, my awareness of the injustice grew with it-- most of the world, rich and poor, live as a slave to the system. The most revolutionary insight was that we could all be living so much better if we shared in the truly splendorous wealth of this earth and each other.
From van lifing across continents to migrant work on cannabis farms, from ramblin motorcycle trips to champagne sunsets, my life of a freewheeling adventure came to a climax on ayahuasca trip on a mountaintop brought me my mission like holy fire: to make a film about the impending crisis, and the better world our hearts know is possible. I lived in my truck in LA with my dog for 2 years shooting a film about the failure of the system, I worked with so many activist groups, nonprofits, Marianne Williamson's presidential campaign, my changemaker bootcamp, my dawning realization that all our "issues" are one system, and we can't solve them reactively: it isn't enough to point out the bad, we have to provide an answer.
I found a group called Moneyless Society, a tribe of others who heard the call, and spent 4 years growing this organization, movement, meme empire and podcast into a phenomenon reaching millions of people and driving deep engagement and thousands of hours of volunteer work, a mutual aid network feeding the people of Appalachia and a nonprofit organization bringing people together around the world into action building the change we want to see in the world. At one point our socials were outperforming MSNBC on facebook--as a grassroots group of volunteers using cutting edge horizontal & egalitarian organizational systems, we leveraged all forms of new media strategically to drive deep engagement, create real impact, and more importantly build lasting community and mutual aid networks, creating a synergistic system. I developed a potent set of skills for building organizations, turning media into powerful ENGAGMENT, to go from companies to communities, to turn audiences into collaborators, and to turn hope into action and impact. We realized the power that a few caring people coming together has to make the world a better place.
In the cataclysmic epoch of the pandemic, the climate crisis, the social uprisings around the planet, I began shooting a film to illuminate the interconnectedness of all these crises into a systemic blueprint for regenerative creative revolution, to show the world we WANT not just endlessly react to the one we don't. This evolved into a cross country, then truly planetary odyssey to put it all together into a new story for planet earth, as a living roadmap to a new world, a world beyond war, poverty, oppressive states and even the need for money, a world of cooperation and reverence for life bringing all the solutions together into a system greater than all of them alone.
On this journey, I've met the most trailblazing heroes, experts, designers, builders and dreamers in the world, and I've worked directly with many of them, helping to weave together their stories and shape a common narrative for our movement. I’ve accumulated an incredible network of heroes solving the biggest problems on earth, I have an expert for every occasion a text away, and I’ve worked for seriously impactful projects like The Global Justice Program, Just Transition (in Africa and Appalachia), Extinction Rebellion, Amazon River Watch, Democracy At Work, Holochain, Ecoversity, Self Determination Theory, Lionsberg, Grassroots Economics, Southface Institute, The Venus Project, Funding the Commons, and I am an official storyteller for the Arhuaco Nation. The film series weaves together all these luminaries and more into our flagship project, the centerpiece of our media ecosystem that will bring the story to the world and blaze a trail for a new system connecting all the solutions.
At the height of this adventure, after 4 continents, countless lifechanging moments, and a lonesome journey to take the world on my shoulders, backpacking around taking on the biggest issues, delving into the heart of darkness, a random notification on my phone brought me the greatest impact of my life: my podcasts and videos had reached an italian-canadian beauty with a heart of gold, and from first sight I knew she was the love of my life. She discovered my work in a literal dark night of the soul, like Sleeping Beauty in bed for 3 years with meningitis of the brain. In total darkness the light of a better world and her luminous curiosity to understand the interlocking systemic sickness of the world. The daughter of a diplomat and a cancer doctor, who speaks 3 languages, has a deep understanding of geopoltics, economics, science and a working application of health that brought her from sickness to the pinnacle of health. She told me that the vision of the world I was seeking and speaking into the void broke her out of her eco-despair she felt since she was a child, and she went to bed every night dreaming of the world the work reveals as imminently possible. We fell instantly in love, like an arrow through my chest from the first time I saw her through the screen, sending a shock to our lives' trajectories, revealing the wisdom in every crisis that brought us together. We met in the italian sunset, and in its fire our old lives ended and a new story began, like we were the first two citizens of a new earth. We are engaged, and we now work together as partners in life and our shared mission to change the world, and rebuild it anew. This is the power of story to change our own lives, and together we are harnessing it to change the world. This is the richness that life rewards us with when we live for purpose, not money, when we fight for love and the liberation of all over short term profits: long term love.
Our adventure drew us ever deeper together, and into our tribe of changemakers and worldweavers. We set up shop in the mountain oasis of Topanga California, at the invite of legendary producer and post production wizard Darius Fisher, who worked on huge films like Avatar, the Aviator, and dozens of social and environmental documentaries like Fuel and Kiss the Ground. In this sanctum overlooking the citadel of Hollywood, we are growing our studio and building our community, with a team of artists, techs, and builders, in a larger web of cutting edge projects, luminaries and visionaries working to tackle the biggest problems of our time, and to create the new in the shell of the old. Our activism and organizing has shifted from any one organization into shaping the narrative that joins them all together.
We are growing Another World is Possible into more than a production company or agency, but as a living model of the new regenerative, worker owned, horizontally governed cooperative economic model embodying the best practices our interlacing life journeys have unveiled-- which we will spend the rest of our days working to spread, develop and evolve into a new system entirely that uses the power of story to make the impossible inevitable.
This is just the beginning of the story, and we can't wait for you to join us in the new world!
"The saving of our world from pending doom will come, not through the complacent adjustment of the conforming majority, but through the creative maladjustment of a nonconforming minority."
We are already connected, let's make it intentional!
